Greg West

GregFacts about Greg...

I was born and raised in a small farming community in the Central Valley of California. My mom, 2 older sisters and older brother, did their best to keep me in line, but… let’s just say I didn’t always live by the Golden Rule.
After graduating from high school, I went north to attend Humboldt State University. I semi-jokingly tell everyone that I crammed 4 years of college into 5. I guess I was a little preoccupied with things like: friends, inter-collegiate soccer and student leadership in an on campus Christian organization. After 5 years, I accidentally acquired enough units in one major to actually graduate… so I gathered up my diploma and before the school could change its mind, I headed south to Marin County.
On my first visit to Marin Covenant Church, I met my future wife (another good reason to go to church). Three years later we were married and moved to Denver to attend graduate school together. Again, I buckled down with the books and crammed 3 years of grad school into 4. In 1990, one year after graduation, I received a call from Clairemont Covenant Church. We have been here in San Diego ever since.
Mari and I have been married for 22 years, which is a wonderful testament to her patience and forbearing! We share the joy of parenting 4 wonderful young ladies: a high school senior, a high school junior, a high school sophomore, and a seventh grader (yes you can feel sorry for me and invite me over to watch Monday Night Football sometime).
I have coached a lot of youth soccer, watched more soccer games than I can count and I serve on the board of a local youth soccer organization. I still play a bit of soccer in a feeble attempt to slow down the hands of time. Yes, I know that is a lot of soccer stuff… Mari has talked about an intervention… so in an effort to bring balance into my life, I now watch a lot of youth volleyball games!
I am living under the umbrella of God’s grace as He has blessed me with a wonderful wife and family and the opportunity to work with some of the best people in one of the best churches in America’s finest city.
Now that I have shared a little window into my life, I would love to get to know you better. Just write me an email or give me a call and we’ll go out for coffee (or my newest favorite… Chai Tea Latte).

Erin Dougherty

ErinGet to know Erin a little bit!

When you are born in America’s finest city, why would you leave? That is what I have asked myself numerous times and the answer has always been “Who knows?!” I am a San Diego native, who lives four miles from my elementary school, two miles from my middle school and high school and three miles from the house I grew up in. I graduated from Point Loma Nazarene University, although I think I am proud to say that the year I graduated was the last year it was Point Loma Nazarene College. PLNC, pronounced “plink” just rolls off the tongue so much better than PLNU, pronounced “plunew”.
Even though I knew it doesn’t get much better than San Diego, I still wanted to spread my wings when it hit the college years. But instead of continual rainfall in the Seattle area I had to “endure” the continual crashing of the waves while hanging out at PLNC. It was during those college years that God started putting a lot of different pieces in my life together.
I actually grew up going to Clairemont Covenant Church and am extremely thankful for the solid faith foundation that it gave me and for the extended family that I have here. While in high school I had the opportunity to participate in many mission trips and one year, while sitting in the dust of the Mexicali Valley, I committed my life to full time ministry. I was confident of God’s calling on my life, but had pretty much no idea what that was going to look like.
As a freshman in college I started working as a volunteer with the Jr. High ministry and loved it! The church hasn’t been able to get rid of me since. I served as an intern one summer and at the end of that summer began working part time in the youth ministry during the school year and full time during the summer. During my senior year of college God made it pretty clear that the commitment I made in Mexico was a commitment to be in full time youth ministry.
So now I have the opportunity to serve in ministry with my former youth pastor, Greg West, in the church that has made an immeasurable impact in my own life and work with students who attend the same schools that I did. I have the opportunity to share with students the gospel message that can radically change their hearts and their lives, just as I saw how it changed mine. And just so I don’t get bored, God allows me to travel to some pretty cool places while on the job!
Another reason I am glad to be in my hometown is because my immediate family is still here, which means that I get to hang out with my two awesome nephews and my amazing baby niece. This usually involves building Lego creations and having intense Nerf dart gun battles…skills that I am sure help me in working with students!
