I grew up in a small community just 30 miles north of New York City with my parents and two sisters. My parent’s mixed religious heritage resulted in Palm Sunday visits to Protestant churches, taking part in the observation of some Jewish holidays and a brief family commitment to the Unitarian Church. The mantra at our house was “There is one mountain but many ways to get to the top.” In the middle of my sophomore year of high school I moved with my immediate family to San Diego. I began my career as a secretary/admin. assistant immediately after graduation. I met Greg in 1984 and we were married in 1986. I also began going to Mesa College part-time to pursue an Associates degree in Business Administration. Four years later, when Grant was born, I put school on hold and when Gordon was born two years later with some medical issues, I quit work as well. Greg and I rarely thought or talked about faith and religion, but about this time God began to work in our lives. Through a business venture we were exposed to people who openly shared about their relationship with God and met a young mom who not only lovingly and patiently shared about scripture and faith with me, but through her daily words and actions I got a new picture of who a Christ-follower is. Both Greg and I gave our lives to Christ that year! We began attending church and I started my Christian “education” through Bible Studies, sermons, and my kid’s Sunday School classes. A few years later I was still trying to navigate my way around the Bible when I was asked if I wanted to be the Children’s Ministry Director. I thought it was the craziest idea ever, but since we had just signed Grant up to attend Horizon Elementary we needed the money, so I said yes. The Lord had better plans than just providing an income though—my knowledge and faith grew exponentially and I developed a passion for Children’s Ministry during the seven years that I served there. During our family’s transition to a new church home, I took a break from Children’s Ministry (although I didn’t stay away too long as I became the CM Coordinator here in early 2008) and decided to turn my attention to the unfinished business of my degree, which I completed in December, 2008. Having to wait nine months to transfer to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, I jumped back into the workforce as a secretary/receptionist at a law firm. But during my first semester back at school God stirred things up and when they began to settle back down I saw very clearly that my current path was not in line with where He wanted me. I am now pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Christian Ministry and am excited to use my gifts and talents to come along side the pastoral staff to serve the church community as the Ministry Assistant. When I’m not at the church or school, you’ll find me walking, hiking, reading or spending time with my family.
